Friday 24 May to Monday 27 May 2019 4 Days 1 country Fully guided, round-trip tour

Summary: This is a four day fully guided round-trip tour in northern France for ladies only. This will give everyone the opportunity to ride with like-minded ladies on a tour in France while the men stay at home.

We start in Folkestone and catch a Channel Tunnel train to Calais.  We ride on all four days, plus there are activities (some optional) each day including dinner on a steam train, horse-riding on sand dunes, a boat trip to view seals, and a tour of a chocolate factory.

The roads we will use are mainly smaller country roads.  We stay in great places en-route.  Elaine Shepherd, the HOG National LOH Officer is the tail-rider on this tour.

This tour is for ladies only and combines riding our Harley-Davidson motorcycles on a leisurely ride with some terrific activities along the way.

The emphasis of this tour is on having a relaxed time, in good company.  We have chosen country roads that are pleasing to ride and combined this with a handful of interesting activities.

Our first ladies-only tour was a big success and we had so much fun on that tour, we want that to continue.

The tour will be lead by experienced Harley-Davidson tour operator Gary France and Elaine Shepherd, the HOG National LOH Officer is back-marker.

Day One (Friday)

We catch a Eurotunnel train from Folkestone to Calais on the Friday morning. If you have never taken the train to France this is an ideal opportunity to do that for the first time, within a group.  We ride 77 miles today and we start by taking the coast road south to Boulogne-sur-Mer, stopping on the way to look at a view of the English Channel.

We then head inland to the Des Caps National Park and have lunch in a small French town.  In the afternoon, we will stop to visit a chocolate factory (and no doubt sample some of its delicacies).

We will be on small country roads all afternoon before we arrive at our hotel for the night – an old millhouse.  Tonight we will eat in the hotel’s restaurant.

Day Two (Saturday)

We have about 85 miles to ride today.  Much of this is on small roads, alongside rivers and through lovely countryside.

Each day when riding, we will stop about every one-and-a-half hours for a coffee break or lunch.  We will also stop a few times each day for photos at scenic views or interesting places.  Lunch stops are normally in cafes in town squares.

We make our way to Le Croty, close to where the River Somme meets the Atlantic Ocean.  We will be staying at a converted farmhouse and cottage for the next two nights.

This evening, we get taxis into the nearby town of Saint-Valery-sur-Somme to catch a small steam train and we will eat dinner on that train.  The price of the train and dinner is included in the tour price.

Day Three (Sunday)

We have a busy day today, with both riding and things to do on the agenda.

For those who want to, you can go horse riding (1 or 1.5 hours) from a local stables and that includes riding the horses on the nearby beach sand dunes.  Or, depending on the timing of the tides, we can catch a small boat tour out into River Somme estuary to look for seals on the estuary beach.  Both the horse riding and seals tour are optional and cost about 35 or 40 Euros each.

We will eat lunch in Saint-Valery-sur-Somme at a pier side restaurant.

That evening, dinner will be at the farmhouse, hopefully outside on the terrace.  This is where the ‘bubbles’ come in, as there will be plenty to be consumed!

Day Four (Monday)

Day 4 is when we ride back 111 miles to Calais.

The roads we ride on our journey back north are a mixture of different types, but almost no motorway.  The group will catch a Eurotunnel train back to Folkestone. We arrive back in the UK at about 4pm UK time.

Our group sizes normally range from 10 to 14 motorcycles.

Each day, we normally start riding at 9am sharp and cover in the region of 70 to 115 miles.  We try to avoid motorways wherever possible and only use these when there is no real alternative. We take mid-morning and mid-afternoon breaks and of course find somewhere for lunch.  Our plan is to normally arrive at that evening’s hotel by around 6pm.

We use good quality hotels – not super luxury and not bottom end, but mid-range – normally 3-star.

We ride at a pace to suit all of the riders.  We stick to all speed limits in towns, but in rural areas we ride at, let’s call them ‘more appropriate’ speeds.  We generally ride in staggered convoy on straighter roads.

As we have pre-booked hotels and a schedule to stick to, we ride in all weathers.  During any exceptionally inclement weather, we will pull over for short periods.  We could experience a range of different types of weather, so bring waterproofs, just in case.

*Ride Rating

Each of our rides has a difficulty rating and this tour is rated as ‘easy’. That means this tour can be ridden by any rider, but we expect that you have been riding large motorcycles for at least a year and that you have some experience of, and are comfortable with, riding in groups of at least eight motorcycles before. While it will be better if you have ridden in mainland Europe before, this is not essential. While there is not much motorway riding on the tour, as a guide, you will be expected to be able to ride at 70mph on motorways. We do not ride fast on this tour. There will be plenty of stops, and some days will be shorter, but the longest days will include around 9 hours of riding, with plenty of breaks.
